Leather Care

Leather is an extremely durable material. There is a reason it's used in attache cases, clothing, and furniture alike. However, leather does need a hand once in a while to keep it looking its best. If you want the leather backpack that you received as one of your graduation gifts to last through years of use, here are few handy tips for how to care for leather.

Although leather bags and other goods are generally more durable than similar goods made from other fabrics and materials, they aren't invulnerable to environmental damage and wear. Contact with moisture, dirt, and body oils can seep through the protective top coat and cause separation of treatment coats and the leather's surface. Cleaning leather on a regular basis can help prevent this, keeping your bag or other items looking newer longer.

Remember to use cleaning products that have been formulated especially for leather. Abrasive solvents and detergents can damage leather and should be avoided. As there are multiple types of leather, make sure that the cleaning product you choose is meant specifically for the type of leather that you're cleaning.

Conditioners and protectants are a great way to increase the lifespan of your leather goods. Leather conditioners replace the oils in leather that are lost over time, which helps keeps the leather suppler and soft. Protectants can increase the life of the top coat by serving as a film between the leather and the dirt it comes into contact with. Protectant should be reapplied after every cleaning.
